Hypodermic Needle
A 50 ski classic ski descent that is much cooler to look at than ski down.
I kind of expected some booting to North Thunder ridge but the whole thing goes as a skin!
I set the skinner and it was fun to come back and use a couple days later.
Topping out and looking at Lone Peak
Top of the line, first tracks and very filled in
Looking back up. I did scrape a couple rocks as I uncovered them. Decent amount of spring sluffing.
Topping out again and looking at Broad Fork Twin Peaks
Further down the Little Cottonwood Canyon
Backlit Pfeifferhorn
Probably some of the best powder I skied on Coalpit Headwall to exit
Wild turkeys(?) on the trail near the road
Notes
- This was probably ~8 miles and ~6400 feet of vertical gain in about 6 ½ hours.
- Not as intimidating as a line as all of the media would suggest, so maybe give it a go when it’s filled in.
- I approached from Hogum Fork which was also not as heinous as people implied, but that’s probably because I had snow as low as the trail/river crossing (I skinned over a giant log) - this is probably the easiest/least committing approach and one that I took over going through Hogum Divide so I could bail if things were awry.
- Had to confirm before ditching my own rope but the fixed line was in, more skier’s left from the waterfall than I expected.
