Pfeifferhorn NW Couloir

The tail end of skiing good snow, one more Wasatch classic.

Booting up Pfeifferhorn

Dresden Face

Looking down the entrance. Hard refrozen snow, so I got a late start to soften things up on the west aspect. It actually looked pretty good far skier’s right out of frame, so that’s probably what I would ski next time if it’s filled in, but I wanted to ski the couloir proper today.

The infamous rappel. Out of frame but kept the skis on which was interesting... All of the beta on this line notes how awkward it is to reach forward on your skis to grab the anchor and I’d kind of agree with that.

Looking back at Pfeifferhorn - it’s been cool checking out the southern LCC zone after not getting to it last year! I was initially worried the Hypodermic Needle approach shedding wet loose this late in the day but the temps + some cloud cover made it cool enough for safe travel.

The line zoomed in - I was thinking the face skier’s right would be more fun since it was less tracked out on hard snow, but maybe it’s too sketchy to rejoin the main line.

Classic canyon views

Backlit Lone Peak. You can’t see from this photo, but the NE couloir was very tracked out. I thought the snow exiting Coalpit Headwall was not great on anything that was not high sheltered norths, and I really thought this as the last pow day of the season, so wondering how well it skied since Cody Townsend and co got on it the day after.

Notes

  • This was probably ~11 miles and ~5900 feet of vertical gain in a little under 7 ½ hours.
  • Pretty straightforward, rappelled using a 60m rope on a good anchor (I was very obviously not the first person this season).
  • Looking back at both Coalpit Headwall exits, I’d now opt to skin up to the top of the Y Couloir and ski out.
