Silver Star Mountain

Flew from Virginia to SLC, then drove straight to WA Pass to catch the first opening week for cars.

The entire ridgeline in this zone from Bacchus Tower to Silver Horn. Funny how for almost this entire outing Silver Star never looks like the tallest thing here.

Looks like a peak but rather just a sharp ridgeline to the west peak of Silver Star

Glacier Peak in the background, with the north couloir of Big Kangaroo in front of it, which is where I would be heading the next day. Even from afar I could see a bit of brown in the couloir...

Looking down the gully skier’s left of the standard ascent one

Looking back up. Schrundy, but this isn’t on the glacier at this point and it’s completely bare late season it looks like. 4-5 inches of north facing pow but still hitting chunks underneath.

Skiing through this debris. Thankfully did not have to put the skins on.

Notes

  • This was probably ~9 miles and ~5500 feet of vertical gain in around 5 ½ hours.
  • Bit of a sporty summit block - opted for the squeeze chimney which felt pretty secure, no limitations with ski boots otherwise.
  • I was kind of interested to west ski out the Vasiliki Tower col, and indeed see some human activity in that region, but too many unknowns so I went back the way I came.
