Big Kangaroo North Couloir
Scouted this line from Silver Star before I later identified it as the north couloir of Big Kangaroo. I wanted a shorter outing with potentially a big one the next day, so opted for this.
Top of the couloir that tops out closest to Big Kangaroo.
I can just barely make out the pixels that is my car parked just off the road.
Same summit views.
Boring for the reader, but fun for me :)
Looking back up the line after having skied it.
Yep, now I can see that the dirtiness that I saw from Silver Star was a bit of ice and debris, maybe coming from overhead.
Side-slipped more of it than I’d like, encountering the most amount of snow variability in such a short run: firm, ice on pow, chalk, sun crust, pow, corn.
Looking back at Silver Star and company
I originally thought about booting up the north couloir so I could ski the long west facing couloir, but the SW exit couloir was also aesthetically pleasing to look at (and ski down).
From this slight angle change, I was no longer able to see my car and thinking it got towed.
I spent the descent thinking if I should go to Winthrop or Newhalem to pick it up - it turns out the snow bank obscured it just enough for me to miss it, whew.
Notes
- This was probably ~5 miles and ~4300 feet of vertical gain in a little under 4 hours.
- There is an obvious gully feature lower down the west facing couloirs towards the hairpin - do not go into it lol. Thankfully there was enough snow to cover the creek and it ended up being quite fun but I can see it being problematic once it starts melting.
- I thought I had more than enough clearance on my car to the road, but maybe just park somewhere else entirely next time. Even though my outing was able to start later, I still made the mistake of arriving too late to the hairpin parking.
- Baguettes at Mazama, always. Ready by 9am, sold out ~2pm?
