Mount Baker Coleman Deming

Just scoping out the Park and Coleman Glacier headwalls. I knew the latter wasn’t going to go, but the entire upper mountain was a bit rimier than I expected - I suppose I was too optimistic about the half inch of precipitation.

I always admire these mega seracs off of Colfax Peak

Classic Baker crater, Rainier in the distance

Looking down the Park Headwall. A little deceptive but this was haaard rime, not to be visually confused with just wind texture on soft snow

I walked back and forth trying to see if there was a possible entry, but the whole slope was rimed up. A group of two came later to ski the upper part on belay and it did not look fun, taking an interminable amount of time between cautious jump turns. No shade but not the style I would ski the headwall in (having skied it before in great conditions) - very glad to commit to my decision of not going down.

Yep the Coleman Headwall was also rimed up when I looked down from the top (funnily enough you can see a pixel of another guy doing the same thing). I talked to a guide who said that there was a party who had to arrest a fall crossing the avy crown pictured. Weird conditions for it this season and so it will have to wait another.

Notes

  • This was probably ~14 miles and ~8100 feet of vertical gain in around 9 ½ hours, lots of goofing around today.
  • Just a straightforward Coleman Deming with no variation, but still happy with this day. An easy but humble 5 hours to the summit, which would have been mindblowing to old me from just a few years ago - the guy who thought the Coleman Deming was a mega line + outing. Gotta take the wins where you can and not shift the goalposts too much :)
