Black Peak

It’s been fun to finally get around to checking out the spring opening of Washington Pass. I’ve joked that so much of the area seems same-y, but having snow on the mountains definitely adds some much needed character that I’ve come to expect from the Cascade Range.

Cool seeing Ann Lake with snow on it, having only been here during larch season. Later we saw north facing ski runs into it, which could be a way to spice up this area next time.

Our first view of Black Peak

Glacier Peak, for the millionth time

Goode, with snow on it this time!

Chris and I were already synced on not going to the summit, and not idling too long for corn. We dropped in around 10am (on a day with marginal refreeze that we encountered on the way up on east aspects) and that ended up being perfect. Although I did muck around too much trying to find the best aspect to ski, so maybe stay skier’s left of the large gully and take that the whole way down not worrrying about aspects too much.

Beginning the ascent up to Last Chance Pass

Looking back at Black’s top couloirs and the gentle corny slopes

We looped around Last Chance Pass to take a slightly N/NE facing run, but it all skied mushy anyways

Did all the work to get past Maple Pass/Heather Pass, and now looking at this morning’s ascent up to Black Peak from Crooked Bum

Whistler Mountain west couloir - saved for a later season!

Notes

  • This was probably ~14 miles and ~8000 feet of vertical gain in about 8 hours.
